Guwahati: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today launched a scheme for constructing 50,000 houses under Indira Awas Yojana for economically backward families at Jaluguti in Marigaon district.

The beneficiaries will get Rs 75,000 in three instalments to construct homes. Implementation of the project will be monitored by the respective departments under district administrations.

Inaugurating the scheme, Gogoi said only the homeless people can feel the value of a house. He said the aim of the scheme was to bring smile to the faces of economically backward families.

He recalled the contribution of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi towards nationalisation of banks, removing shortage of foodgrain, space science and communication.

The chief minister praised the panchayat and rural development department of the state government for its development activities like digging ponds, planting saplings, constructing stadium and making pucca roads in the rural areas.
