New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has launched its much awaited biggest housing scheme offering 26,000 flats of which 24,000 are one room sets meant for the lower income group.

However, despite the scale of the scheme it is unlikely to bridge the housing gap in the city. The EWS Housing scheme alone requires 23 million units.

Infact the overall shortage in economically weaker section (EWS) and low income groups (LIG) housing in India is estimated to be at 25 million. Housing shortage in the country is expected to touch 38 million by 2030.

Considering the situation Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not find it that easy to fulfill his promise of providing affordable housing to all by 2022. The total cost for the project is estimated at 11 lakh crore. To find a solution to the problem a meeting of urban development experts took place in the capital on Sunday.

Representatives from India Inc voiced their concerns on the subject. Considering 93 million people live in slums in India, slum redevelopment was one of the next biggest issues addressed at the meeting.

India Institute of Local Self-Government President Dr Jatin Modi said that he would be giving a memorandum to the government.

With India's urban housing shortage estimated around 18.78 million dwellings, if the government wants to achieve its goal of housing for all by 2022, changes need to be ushered in. The industry will be demanded to take ownership as well as give out faster clearances as it takes around 12 months to get one clearance, when over 50 clearances are required.

"The shortage is huge, the government needs to involve local bodies," said Ex UD Secretary M Ramachandran.
