GURGAON: An inspection of construction sites in the city conducted at the behest of the National Green Tribunal found most of them violating norms laid down by the central government and the green court itself.

Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) inspectors visited a dozen sites, most of them on Golf Course Road, on Sunday and Monday in the wake of the NGT's order on April 7 to stop work at sites not adhering to the Union environment ministry's 2010 guidelines.

Eight of the sites, all housing projects, were found guilty of violations, a senior official of the HSPCB's Gurgaon wing said. Inspectors also visited a couple of sites on the Dwarka expressway.

The NGT had made special mention of Golf Course Road, which itself is undergoing a makeover, for "uncontrolled dust pollution".

"We visited the sites and there was blatant violation happening not only at construction sites on Golf Course Road but also in some areas near Dwarka Extension," the senior official said.

Elaborating on the type of violation, the official said walls had not been erected around the sites to prevent dust pollution, nor had sprinklers been installed to stop dust from flying around.

The official said the pollution control board submit an affidavit before the NGT on Wednesday giving details of the findings. "We will also issue notices to the developers who are violating the environment ministry norms at construction sites. If they still don't rectify the deficiencies, we will impose penalties too," the official said. "We can even stop the construction in case of repeat violations," he added.

Another senior official of the HSPCB said, "According to the NGT order, we will carry out inspection on a regular basis. Only then can we ensure that the guidelines are being followed at all places."
