HYDERABAD: With the deadline for farmers in the proposed AP capital region to give consent letters for parting with their land ending on Wednesday, farmers from the 10 riverside villages who are opposed to land pooling are intensifying their efforts to stall the state government from taking any vindictive measures. The farmers are scheduled to meet in Rayapudi village on Thursday to take a decision on legally challenging the notification that brought their villages under the land pooling purview.

According to officials, till Wednesday, consent letters were given for pooling of only 18,000 acres as against the target of 30,000 acres. However, farmers claim this figure includes government land as well. On Wednesday, the deadline for farmers from the villages of Nidamarru, Undavalli, Penumaka and Tadepalli, mostly hardcore opponents of land pooling, to give their consent letters ended. For the rest of the villages, the deadlines ended by January 7 itself.

According to officials, barring two or three, there is opposition to the land pooling in every village. In Krishnayapalem, the state has acquired 742.97 acres of land from farmers, which accounts for 47 per cent of the total 1441.74 acres of patta land available with the ryots.

In Nowlur unit one, as on January 8, of the 2,040 acres of land available with the farmers, the state has been able to secure consent letters for a mere 32.3 acres. Similarly, in Nowlur unit 2, as against 2,036 acres with the farmers, consent was secured only for 40.13 acres.

In Rayapudi village unit one, of the total 1,525 acres, the state has been able to get 426.38 acres. In the second unit of Rayapudi, only 46.42 per cent of total patta land (684.74 acres) has been pooled.

In Kondamarajupalem, 27.93 per cent of 482.33 acres has been acquired, while in Lingayapalem, 48.12 per cent of the 520 acres has been parted with. From Velagapudi village, officials could get consent letters for just 111.3 acres (59.33 per cent) as against the total patta land of1,823 acres.

The other villages which disappointed the officials are Venkatapalem (14.39 per cent), Mandam unit one (38.43 per cent), Mandam unit 2 (61.97 per cent) and Anantavaram (79.34 per cent).

Official sources said it would be difficult for them to achieve the target of 30,000 acres before end of February unless farmers are persuaded to part with the land or the deadline is extended. "In many villages, farmers are confused due to the campaign by the critics of land pooling while some are holding on to their land in the hope of getting more compensation. A political decision is necessary to resolve the issues," a deputy collector engaged in the land pooling exercise in one the villages said.
