NAVI MUMBAI: The civic body will appoint an agency to draft a city development plan, as the present area, planned by Cidco, is not enough for the population.

Civic officials said that the original estimates of population for areas under Cidco and NMMC jurisdiction need to revised, as the CRISIL report has estimated that population will be around 22-25 lakh by 2025.

The new city plan will map the growth in transport corridors with the nodal growth. It will encompass an area of 162.5 sq km and 30 villages under NMMC, said sources.

It will also look at land use in the civic area. NMMC is also looking into metro and water transportation.

The civic officials also said that the planned coastal road from Vashi creek to Airoli and Belapur near Kille gaothan traffic junction has to be revised to provide a continuous corridor to connect with Mumbai and its suburbs, after the airport is developed.

The 2011 census stated certain nodes such as Vashi had reached saturation point and the transportation requirements from Vashi towards Airoli was getting increasingly clogged due to vehicular population.

The integration of the city's northern end with Mumbai suburbs like Mulund and connectivity to Thane has also made MMRDA take a look at several projects.

It will have a major role in enhancing the city's transportation corridor, especially in the northern part of Navi Mumbai.

The total area of 342.7 sq km under Cidco was approved by state government August 1979, according to the civic body's annual green report. The civic body was formed by a government order dated December 17, 1991. It was also made the town planning authority.
