BANGALORE: The next time you approach the fire and emergency services department to get a no-objection certificate (NoC) for a new building that will house public facilities, make sure 'no-smoking' boards are installed in its key locations.

The government has issued a fresh notification mandating that tobacco-control norms be put in place at public places, including highrises, theatres, restaurants and amusement centres.

"Though there is a norm under the COTPA Act banning smoking at public places, we have found serious violations. The fire department won't issue NoCs to building owners anymore if they don't comply with tobacco-control norms," said a senior department official. The notification, a copy of which is available with TOI, makes it mandatory to include the norms under Section 4 of COTPA in the fire-safety code for buildings.

"Section 4 prohibits smoking in public places and it is mandatory to put up 'no-smoking boards' as specified by schedule 2 of the Act prominently at the entrance of public places," said the order issued on September 22.

A senior official said copies of the order have been sent to the district fire officers.
