Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government has decided to provide house freely to Slum Dwellers. On this regard the state Cabinet has approves Odisha Property Right to Slum Dwellers and Protection of New Slum Bill 2012. This was informed by the chief secretary Bijay Patnaik.
As per the proposal, property rights to the slum dwellers need to be given because of the steep rise in land prices, urban poor are not able to afford housing and are often seen encroaching the most valued Government land in urban areas.
As per the provision, an urban poor shelter fund is proposed, which will be meant for providing financial support to ULBs, Development authorities and Odisha State Housing Board for creating housing stock for slum re-development and re-habilitation with provision of basic urban services.
The government will also bring out a special legislation for granting property rights to slum dwellers and preventing the growth of new slums. A bill to this effect will be brought in the forthcoming winter session of the state Assembly, said chief secretary Bijay Patnaik.
