HYDERABAD: The state government's proposal to regularise land encroachment up to 125 square yards by the poor has been approved by all political parties at a meeting here on Tuesday.

The all-party meeting also agreed to chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's suggestion that the government regularise houses built by middle-class people on 250 square yards to 300 square yards with a nominal fee. A reasonably higher fee would be charged for regularising land between 300-500 square yards.

The government would pool all those living in areas between 15 and 50 square yards and construct multi-storied structures to provide better housing for such people. Any constructions found on land that is more than 500 square yards, would attract a hefty regularisation fee, as per the proposal put forward by the chief minister.

However, opposition parties including the Congress, TDP, BJP, YSR Congress and Left parties vehemently opposed the move to regularise vacant encroached lands and those with a built-up area of more than 500 square yards as they reasoned that those would be encroached by the rich and powerful.

"We made it clear that such lands encroached by the rich and powerful should be taken back and in case it is not possible, the properties must be auctioned," said Congress MLA Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who attended the all-party meeting.

Vikramarka said that opposition parties including the Congress, TDP and BJP opposed three changes in the Metro rail alignment proposed by the government, while the MIM rooted for the proposal. While the government wanted to change the alignment near assembly building, Sultan Bazar area and Old City, the opposition felt no necessity for any realignment.

The proposal to construct the Vinayak Sagar Lake exclusively meant for immersing Ganesh idols which was discussed in the previous all-party meeting did not come up for discussion on Tuesday.
