INDORE: Tightening its noose around lease holders for alleged misuse of government land, district administration on Wednesday issued a notice giving a week's time to the erring institutions, trusts and individuals to produce valid documents else surrender the land allotted to them.

Additional district magistrate (ADM) Dilip Kumar said government leased out land for 30 years for different activities subject to its renewal after thorough inspection. "Lease agreement would be cancelled and we will reclaim land if the lease holders fail to produce valid documents within stipulated time," said Kumar adding the blame for cancellation would be solely that of lease holders.

However, sources at the district collector's office said administration has no record of land leased in last six decades. "Records of only 99 lands on lease are available. It is hard to believe that commercial capital of MadhyaPradesh-Indore would have given only 99 lands on lease as against Jabalpur where more than 16,000 plots/land have so far been leased out," said an official, adding that the exercise will help in updating the land records of administration.

Sources said reason for action against lease holders is non-availability of government land in Indore. "The Indore Development Authority (IDA) has demanded a piece of land for construction of affordable housing but it was denied as there is no sufficient land," said the source, adding, along with this the government is also finding it difficult to fulfill the requirement of land for development and other purpose. So, government is planning to take back land from lease holders if they were found to be violating lease agreement.

Sources mocked saying how would the district administration know whether the lease is in violation and against whom it is going to take action if there are no records.
