CHENNAI: Residents of Kalaimagal Nagar in Kolathur are up in arms over illegal construction of a balcony which is encroaching on the public road.
On 4th Street in Kalaimagal Nagar at Lakshmipuram, one of the residents is constructing an extra floor with a balcony that is protruding on to the main road by 2.5 feet. Residents of the surrounding houses complained of the encroachment and approached the local corporation authorities two month ago stating that the construction flouted corporation norms.
"After repeated complaining, the authorities finally issued a notice in December ordering the house owner to demolish the illegal balcony. A month has passed and the balcony still stands," said one of the residents who made the complaint.
The tussle with the owner of the illegal construction began a couple of months ago when residents of the surrounding houses saw the illegal balcony coming up and requested its removal. When the owner refused, residents took up the issue through their resident association and wrote to the authorities.
Officials in the Zone III office said that they have served the notice and are awaiting demolition of the illegal structure by the owner. However the issue has died down since some of the residents retracted their complaint fearing a backlash.
The local councillor said that since the complaints were retracted by some, the construction still stands. According to the engineers constructing the extra floor, the issue has been resolved and there may not be further need of intervention by authorities.
Local residents fear that the illegal construction will set a wrong precedence to further constructions in the area. A resident said, "There are about 20 more plots in the area where construction is set to commence soon. If the illegal balcony is not broken, many more will come up."
