LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi will be the only city in India whose detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared in 7D visualisation under the Smart City project. So while other smart cities will be planned in the form of 2-D technical drawings, Varanasi's DPR will allow for a comprehensive 'look-and-feel' blueprint.

One of the USP's of the DPR will be that it will have scope for incorporating future developments, even beyond the Smart City infrastructure. An exclusive software called Building Information Modelling (BIM) will be used to prepare the 7D DPR that will provide a standard design for Smart City modifications in Varanasi.

This software will be handed over to Varanasi Development Authority later for reference when it plans other development in the area.

For this DPR, the project consultant Rudrabhishek Enterprises Pvt. Ltd (REPL) has signed an MoU with a Hungarian company called 'Graphisoft' that specialises in virtual visualisation of projects beyond 3D.

This augments the three primary spatial dimensions (width, height & depth) with time as the fourth, cost as the fifth, environmental impact as the sixth and facility management as the seventh dimension.

The MoU was signed in Kyoto, Japan. Graphisoft will evaluate all aspects of Varanasi's DPR on BIM to give exact visualisation of the proposed construction. The plan, spreading over 1,389 acres of Varanasi will include retrofitting of Old City alongside Ganga, comprising major temples, heritage sites & cultural places with emphasis on socio-economic growth.

Soumya Das, director of the company, told TOI, "The challenges of Varanasi Smart City are unique, hence it calls for advanced and innovative technological solutions. The roads of Varanasi are very congested and its landmarks carry historical and cultural importance. We needed exact projection of the plan, hence we decided to use BIM that will evaluate all aspects of proposed construction like architecture, structural design, roads, facilities of sewerage, water supply and drainage at a given place, thereby giving us the final picture of Smart City development."

Unlike ordinary DPR, 7D plan helps save construction cost as it discourages any deviation from the actual design. Since BIM is able to merge plans of various stakeholders—architect, engineer and contractor into one and evaluate it at planning stage itself, chances of deviation are negated. The 7D DPR costs about 0.5% more than the cost of preparing ordinary 2D DPRs.
