Bengaluru: Vegetarians as a preferred choice for renting out properties is slowly becoming a trend across the City. Earlier, it was restricted to the traditional localities.
But the fad is spreading to the newer and ‘cosmopolitan’ areas like Bannerghatta Road, Yelahanka, Electronics City, Indiranagar and Whitefield. Even the commercial property sector is not insulated from the vegetarian/non-vegetarian demarcation.
This, realtors say, is having a negative impact on an otherwise booming realty sector, which is gradually shifting to Bengaluru’s outskirts and other cities. The resale value of the properties is also affected, apart from limiting the options for buyers.
They are sentimentally hurt by this factor, the realtors say. “My family was new to Bengaluru and we were looking for a flat. Many people did not entertain us because we were non-vegetarians. We experienced this in many localities,” said Sarika Dutta, a resident of Indiranagar.
Lakshmi K and her colleagues, who were searching for space to start their business in Bengaluru, were shocked when they were refused a prime space on Rajkumar Road, only because some of their employees were meat eaters.
“We then approached a broker. He showed us a couple of places in and around Seshadripuram and the response was no different. We were even refused space near Sankey Tank for the same reason. This is absurd,” she said.
Students vs vegetarians
Anil Kumar, a broker, said, “Earlier people preferred families because they thought problems were minimal. Then, sellers saw financial benefits by renting one flat to many students. But now, the demand for vegetarians has increased. This is seen in newly developing areas too. There is no problem for fresh sale, but is becoming a menace for rentals across Bangalore.”
Ramakrishna, who wants to rent out a two-BHK house in Indiranagar, said, “We prefer vegetarians. No foul smell emits from their house when they cook and animal waste, which attracts street dogs, is not thrown around. We are vegetarians and we prefer them because our food habits match.”
Kiran H, owner of a commercial space in BTM Layout, said, “Most non-vegetarians are also alcoholics. We do not want any commotion in our area. So we have decided to rent out our property to vegetarians only.”
Malleswaram, Seshadripuram, Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Indiranagar, Koramangala, Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar, Bannerghatta Road, Domlur, Electronics City, Hosur Road, Banaswadi and Whitefield are some of the areas where vegetarians are highly preferred, say realtors.
Ayub Khan, secretary of the Bangalore Realtors Association and National Realtors Association-India, said there was indeed such a trend.
“Many people in the City are facing this problem, especially while searching for a house. This is also one way of saying non-Hindus are not preferred. This issue was limited to some orthodox areas a decade ago. But now, it has spread across the City. This has also gradually started to affect the realty sector as over 70 per cent less property is in the offing. The same is the case with cities such as Surat, Ahmedabad and Mumbai,” he said.
