NEW DELHI: People who have registered for DDA's latest housing scheme will most likely face a severe potable water crisis as the authority has not secured a water supply line from DJB. Moreover, DJB has also refused to provide an immediate solution for the nearly 20,000 flats that are being offered to registrants.

In response to an RTI, DDA has estimated 1.31 lakh litres of daily water requirement for the upcoming housing colonies. DDA has stated that it plans to provide water to the colonies till DJB takes charge of supplying water, but sources say that providing this quantity may not be easy.

DDA said that nine locations are being developed for the 2014 housing scheme spread over Narela, Dwarka and Rohini with a total of 19,222 flats. DJB has refused to extend water lines to the areas and if this is not done by March 2015, when successful DDA scheme registrants move into their flats, severe water shortage will be faced by residents.

"We need time to divert our limited resources to meet the demands of newer areas. For now, we don't have newer sources of water but we are trying to explore alternatives like purifying water through STPs using international technologies," said a senior DJB official.

The official added that a breakthrough could be reached if Munak Canal could be developed in time, from where DJB expects to provide around 80 million gallons of water per day (MGD).

In the interim period it will be up to DDA to provide water, but the authority's record of meeting water requirements at colonies it has developed earlier isn't too promising. "DDA hasn't done a commendable job in Dwarka. I face water shortage every summer despite the sub-city being built two decades ago," said Arun Banerjee, a resident of Dwarka who filed the RTI.

Against Dwarka's peak demand of 17MGD, DDA is only supplying 3.5MGD. Interestingly, Delhi high court, while hearing a PIL filed against DDA's incapability to provide water to residents of Dwarka, had asked the authority to not develop newer areas till water is made available to already planned areas.

DDA officials said that arrangements are being made to ensure water supply in Dwarka through borewells and water tankers and similar steps will be taken for the new flats.
