GURGAON: A demolition drive was carried out on Sunday in Sector 47 to free about 13 acres of HUDA land from squatters. Fearing protests, a force of over 500 police personnel was deployed, but in the end, it was carried out peacefully.
According to SDO (survey 2) H S Jhakkar, HUDA has attempted 11 demolition drives in the past to free land from encroachers. "A 3.65 acre plot earmarked for a hospital, and land for two 18 m roads — one leading to Uniworld, the other to project site of a HUDA group housing society — which were successfully evicted today," said Jhakkar.
"In 2011, when we tried a similar drive, encroachers turned violent and even set fire to an official vehicle," he added. Jhakkar said 207 permanent residential structures and 200 temporary slum units were demolished peacefully on Sunday.
The drive was spearheaded by estate officer-1 Om Prakash, who was also the duty magistrate. Estate officer-2 Tarun Kumar Pawaria was part of the demolition team, along with five executive engineers, 10 sub-divisional officers and nine junior engineers.
"Seven earth movers and 80 labourers were pressed into service for the activity, which lasted from 8 am to 2 pm," Jhakkar said.
