Raichur: Responding to allegations of a large-scale encroachment of the trench around the historic Raichur fort in the city, Minister For Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake said that the State government had zero-tolerance policy on encroachments.


He was speaking to reporters after holding a meeting for reviewing the progress of various projects in his department at the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Monday.


“Government has come up with akrama-sakrama scheme for reasonable encroachments of government lands. 50 per cent of encroachment for residential purpose and 25 per cent of encroachment for commercial purposes would be regularised under the scheme. All other illegal occupancies would strictly be cleared,” he said.


Earlier during the review meeting, Minister for Medical Education and Raichur In-charge Sharan Prakash Patil also reprimanded the Raichur City Municipal Council commissioner G Ramadas for not taking any action for clearing the encroachments.


“You need not take anybody's permission for clearing the encroachments of government lands. Without clearing the encroachments, may civic projects, including roads, underground drainage system and drinking water supply could not be implemented,” he said and instructed the officer to update him within three days on the process initiated.


Expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of the officials at his department in the district, Mr. Sorake said that Urban Development Authority seemed have forgotten its duty. “Several shortcomings, inefficiencies and pointless delays in implementing developmental projects are found in the review. We will tighten the functioning,” he said.


When asked about upgrading larger village to town panchayat, the minister cleared that all the villages with over 15,000 population and over 50 per cent of its activity was non-agricultural would be converted into TPs.
