     Unitech shelves plans in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR & KOLKATA: The global financial meltdown appears to have begun hurting the northeastern states, including Orissa with several manufacturing units downing shutters. Realty major Unitech too has decided to shelve its plans to set up a retail cum commercial complex in Orissa. Atleast, for the time being!

"The Delhi based realtor is believed to have requested the Orissa government to allot land against Rs 52 crore of initial payment made. The group has no immediate plans to take up a project in Orissa," a Unitech spokesperson told ET.

Orissa government officials, however, deny receiving any communication from Unitech indicating its intent to shelve the proposed project.

Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) vice-chairman D K Singh, however, said: "We have received several communications from the company explaining the difficulties they are facing in this slowdown. They have also sought more time. In one of the letters, Unitech has also requested for allotment of 25% of land for the time being based on the same amount of money deposited by them."

It may be mentioned Unitech had emerged as the highest bidder in the tender floated by BDA for development of an integrated residential cum commercial complex on some 10.74 acres at Chandrasekharpur. The proposed complex entailed building of shopping arcades, multiplexes & entertainment centers.

Snitch's bid of Rs 211 crore, at the time, meant it had offered to shell out roughly Rs 20 crore for each acre that would be offered by BDA. Sources said the construction major has asked the state government to pay back the Rs 52 crore that it had deposited with the government. State urban development secretary Arun Panda said the government cannot return the money as it would violate the norms of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Unitech and BDA.
